Brochure 5G-Industry Campus Europe

The 5G-Industry Campus Europe offers a unique ecosystem for research, development and testing of 5G technology for industrial applications. The Fraunhofer IPT and its research partners in Aachen are testing the first industrial 5G applications at the 5G-Industry Campus Europe. In seven sub-projects, various application scenarios are being researched, from 5G sensor technology for monitoring and controlling complex manufacturing processes, mobile robots cooperating on an assembly task, or AGVs (automated guided vehicles) enabling flexible and logical supply chains – for all these applications, 5G offers the possibility of reliable real-time communication and thus the possibility of networked, adaptive production. Furthermore, the research partners are also testing the use of modern edge cloud systems for fast data processing in order to exploit the potential of 5G in networked, adaptive production.

5G technology for networked adaptive production

Modern manufacturing processes and machinery have to be designed to be flexible and adaptable in order to increase productivity, efficiency and product quality. This calls for the development of ever more powerful sensor and control technology. At the same time, the scale and complexity of the manufacturing processes involved are increasing steadily. As far as machining operations in particular are concerned, but also in the robotics sector and anywhere distributed systems are operated, this means increasingly complex sequences of component and system component move-ment, requiring swift, reliable and wireless data transfer for the sensor systems. It is vital that these wireless transmission processes are robust and capable of meet-ing the burgeoning demands in terms of transmission rates and latency.

5G-Industry Campus Europe

The 5G-Industry Campus Europe switched on its radio network: Through an area of almost one square kilometer, 19 antennas and a bandwidth of ten gigabits per second, we will run the largest 5G research network in Europe. The aim of the involved partners is to open up new fields of application for 5G mobile communication technology in production. Together with the project partners from WZL and FIR, the Fraunhofer IPT will develop and implement applications and solutions for digital and networked production.

5G Campus MAG

In our 5G Campus MAG, experts from industry and research talked about the opportunities and challenges of 5G for companies, showed what is possible with the new mobile technology and how 5G can be integrated into production. We also presented the 5G-Industry Campus Europe, Europe’s largest 5G research infrastructure, and showed which 5G application scenarios we are already testing and trialling with our partners.

Testbed of the 5G-ACIA

The 5G-Industry Campus Europe is one of the four 5G testbeds of the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) since April. The testbed is part of the 5GSMART project, a collaborative EU project that aims to show how 5G can boost manufacturing. On the 2700m² shopfloor, partners from industry and research are testing new industrial 5G applications and edge cloud systems for fast data processing to exploit the potential of 5G in a networked adaptive production.
